Container Bed Gardening + Sheet Mulcing in Los Osos

Sheet Mulching is what it sounds like, it’s the layering of different mulch ingredients, one sheet at a time.

Think Princess and the Pea

Some ingredients I like to use when sheet mulching include:

  • cardboard

  • wood chips

  • sand

  • rocks or gravel

  • dirt

  • worm casting

  • newspaper

  • straw

  • coconut coir

  • large flat plant trimmings

  • leaves

  • mushroom compost

Mix-n-match layers of materials you have easily on hand. Add more layers as materials or budget allows. Consider the composition of each ingredient and use judiciously. Be mindful of adding any material that might carry plant disease. Some people prefer to not use cardboard given it can carry glues and inks. I don’t mind using it as a base layer for weed suppression as long as there are many many inches (8 inches or more) of other organic materials on top.
